It looks like a quilting-trend is going on, designer brands are competing with each other under the radar. But that’s a not a surprise, quilting looks chic, elegant and expensive, which fits perfectly in the category of high fashion. After Saint Laurent introduced the ‘Y’ Quilting, now they released a brand-new Stitched Diamond Matelasse Quilting.

A classic bag to own, this Saint Laurent College Bag is not a new bag. Laying eyes on it might feel like an old love rekindling that spark in your heart because there’s something good about it that has changed over the course of years. If you look closer, you’ll instantly notice that the College Bag is now sporting a new ‘Stitched Diamond Matelasse Quilting’ which means that the quilting is done by a meticulous way of stitching.

Aside from this, it features a top handle with metal chain and leather removable shoulder strap so you can easily transition it from being a handbag to a shoulder bag. It also has an interlocking YSL signature buckle magnetic closure placed in the middle for an added sense of security.

Compartment wise, it has an exterior back slot pocket, an interior central zip compartment, and 1 slot pocket to hold your essentials.

But overall, be prepared, because it’s a matter of time that Saint Laurent will inject this new Quilting in other Classic Bags.

Gucci, Yves Saint Laurent Prove Profitable for Kering

Other Brands

French luxury group Kering delivered a rise in 2016 profits and sales on Friday that surpassed expectations, driven by the revival of its biggest brand, Gucci, and strong sales at fashion house Yves Saint Laurent. Gucci, under the leadership of designer Alessandro Michele and Chief Executive Marco Bizzarri since early 2015, has revamped its stores and adopted a vintage "geek chic" look that has proved popular with customers and driven higher sales.

"We recreated the Gucci dream. In 2017 we will make it a booster of sustainable growth," deputy chief executive Jean-Francois Palus told a news conference. "Gucci is cashing in on a brilliant self-help program, which has brought back the brand on the map," said Exane BNP Paribas analyst Luca Solca. Gucci and Yves Saint Laurent now generate 50 percent of their revenue from the tech-savvy generations born after 1980.

Kering, who also owns the Stella McCartney and Puma brands, was upbeat despite what it described as an uncertain business environment. The group said 2017 would see a stabilization of falling sales at underperforming Bottega Veneta, whose exclusive positioning will be strengthened. The strong results provided further evidence of a recovery in the wider luxury goods sector, after rival LVMH posted record revenue and profits for 2016 and Hermes gave a confident outlook for 2017.

Chairman and CEO Francois-Henri Pinault was similarly optimistic, citing positive signals in Hong Kong and improving demand in China and the United States. Recurring operating income for the year rose 14.5 percent to 1.886 billion euros ($2 billion) while group revenue rose 8.1 percent on a comparable basis to 12.385 billion euros. This compared with expectations for 1.83 billion euros of profit and 12.28 billion euros of sales according to a Reuters consensus conducted with Inquiry Financial.

The performance was achieved despite Gucci's decision to stop discounting and some 85 percent of Gucci sales in the quarter were from its new Michele's collection. Yves Saint Laurent, which accounts for over 10 percent of Kering's luxury sales, continued to progress with new designer Anthony Vaccarello at the helm since April. Yves Saint Laurent sales rose 20.5 percent during the quarter while the recurring operating margin of the division jumped over the 20 percent mark for the full year.

Bottega Veneta remained a weak spot with sales down 8.6 percent in the quarter. The brand was hurt by a slowdown in Chinese tourist spending in Japan and Europe. There were, however, signs of an improvement in Chinese tourist spending in western Europe in the last quarter of the year, the group said.

German sportswear firm Puma had strong sales growth and gave a confident forecast for 2017 on Thursday. Pinault said the priority was to improve profitability at Puma, when asked if he had any plans to sell the brand.

Saint Laurent SS 2017: Vaccarello Channels Yves

Other Brands

Anthony Vaccarello’s highly anticipated debut collection for Saint Laurent arrived at Paris Fashion Week. The Belgian designer continued on the glam and grunge chic sartorial path of his predecessor Hedi Slimane, while adding a sleek and sexy flair. In other words, bid au revoir to the thigh-high slits, and say hello to super-short skirts.

Black leather was the dominant element in the collection, appearing in all kinds of pieces, from extreme mini skirts to bomber jackets; from slinky coats to sheer tops and to a mono boob dress prone to overexposure. The late Yves adored black, but Vaccarello clearly venerates it. Only several denim, lame, silver, and white elements serve as a break from the monochromatic magnificence.

However, the pair of black stilettos with YSL initials as the heels, was the ultimate attention stealer. YSL’s trademark “smoking” jacket was also referenced in a knowing homage to the singer Grace Jones, a huge fan of the house’s founder.

The collection was well commended by the front row audience, which included singer Jane Birkin and her actress daughters, and late Saint Laurent’s partner Pierre Berge. He later told reporters that he “really liked the references” to the style of Yves himself, “the codes, the vocabulary and the syntax… after that you can do what you want.”

Saint Laurent Small Cassandre

Other Brands

saint_laurent_small-cassandre1There are two reasons why I wrote this post. Firstly, this is proof the iconic YSL logo is alive and well over at Saint Laurent, despite the name change and everyone assuming the worst. Secondly, the bag, named Cassandre, is also the pseudonym of Adolphe Jean-Marie Mouron, the man who designed the logo in 1963.

Proving that he has a heart after all, Hedi pays homage to the logo (and its designer) with the Saint Laurent Small Cassandre, a sexy, slinky suede number that measures 17 cm across by 13 cm. Crafted out of suede and lined with lush leather on the inside, the bag is also adorned with a rather large representation of the logo, along with a long (I’m-calling-it-a-disco) tassel as well as a long chain shoulder sling.

saint_laurent_small-cassandre2Priced at GBP1065, the one in black suede is available now via Net-A-Porter, and once I get the prices in for SGD and HKD I’ll do another update. A nod to 70s opulence and glamour, and a beautiful evening bag for partying the night away. Yves would approve.
